GOOD NEWS

Women got the W this month

Image: David L. Ryan/The Boston Globe

Womenā€™s History Month is always good news. But a Womenā€™s History Month-themed good news roundup? Thatā€™s great news.

Here are the feel-good stories about local rockstar ladies you mightā€™ve missed:

āœļø A Roxbury teen is heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Could you spell ā€œSenecio?ā€ Can you even pronounce it? Well, Sapna Malhotra can, and she did, taking down 23 of the cityā€™s top spellers to win the Boston Spelling Bee and earn herself a spot at nationals. All three of the top spots were taken by ladies this year, but only Malhotra will be heading to D.C. in May for a shot at ending Bostonā€™s 90-year winning drought at the contest.

šŸ‘·ā€ā™€ļø Who runs the ā€¦ construction industry? Girls! Or at least, theyā€™re on their way. Local women in construction got a moment in the sun during national women in construction week this month. Though the industry has been slowly becoming more balanced here in Mass., a recent executive order from Gov. Maura Healey is pushing to get even more women into construction. ā€œWe get the best results when our workforce reflects the rich diversity of the people of our state,ā€ Healey said.

šŸ’ Bostonā€™s womenā€™s sports teams are popping OFF. First, the Boston Guard won the first ever womenā€™s lacrosse league championship 22-17 over the New York Charging. Next, the Boston Fleet put on a serious show at a sold-out Agganis Arena (they lost, but it still felt like a win!). And later this month, the Boston Banshees, Bostonā€™s new pro rugby team, will be debuting as part of Womenā€™s Elite Rugby. Go off and go sports!

šŸ‘µšŸ¾ Feb. 4? Thatā€™s Rosa Parks Day to you. OK, this was technically back in February, but .... Mass. became the ninth state in the U.S. to designate a day to honor Parks, the ā€œmother of the civil rights movement.ā€ Weā€™ll celebrate it on Parksā€™ birthday ā€” this year would have been her 112th. The move carries extra weight as President Trump cracks down on DEI, which has caused some agencies to suspend MLK Jr. Day and Black History Month celebrations.

šŸ€„ The girlsā€™ newest fixation? Mahjong. Younger women across Mass. are finding community in a somewhat unexpected place: Mahjong, the Chinese tile-based game similar-ish to rummy. The game has taken off among women from the South Shore to Boston, who have created a group called South Shore Mahjong thatā€™s selling out classes constantly. Of course, the game itself is fun, but the added bonus is the community building that goes on behind the scenes.

Start saying goodbye to beige food

šŸ„—šŸŒ± Itā€™s been a long winter of potatoes, pastas, and brown stews ā€” now, get ready to eat with color again. This spring, Bostonā€™s farm-to-table restaurants are serving up peak-season perfection. Quick & dirty headlines

šŸ¤‘ The Celtics have a new Daddy Warbucks. After a few months on the market, the Cā€™s are reportedly being sold to William Chisholm for a whopping $6.1 billion. Chisholm is a California-based private equity director, but donā€™t fret! He grew up in Georgetown, Mass., so heā€™s technically an OG fan. The sale is the highest sum paid for a North American sports team in history, surpassing the $6.05 billion sale of the NFLā€™s Washington Commanders. Letā€™s just hope a private equity guy doesnā€™t ruin the Celtics like Red Lobster (kidding).

āœˆļø True: Your Uber to Logan is gonna get pricier. But not as much as we originally thought (for now). After receiving complaints about Massportā€™s plans to increase rideshare fees to $15 for a roundtrip to Logan, Uber, Lyft, and Massport reached an agreement. The plan: Starting July 1, ride-hail companies will charge a $5.50 fee for airport pickups and drop-offs (up from $3.25). The agreement also includes Uber and Lyft restarting shared rides at the airport and a pilot program allowing passengers to take an Uber or Lyft to a Logan Express parking site at a discounted rate.

šŸš‡ Itā€™s a rough weekend to be a Red Liner. The MBTA is officially in its ~signal upgrade~ era, meaning shuttle buses will replace service between JFK/UMass and Braintree on March 22 and 23. Thankfully, commuter rail service will be fare-free between Braintree and South Station. The Mattapan trolley will also be OOO for track work starting 11:30 p.m. through end of service from March 23 through 27, so shuttle buses it is! And look alive, Blue Liners: Bowdoin station will be closed from 7 p.m. tonight through the end of service Monday. Annnnd scene.

šŸ© Last chance to kiss your fave neighborhood diner goodbye. Thatā€™s what tons of locals have been doing this week as Twin Donuts, an iconic, 70-year-old Allston diner, plans to shut its doors Monday. Dozens lined up under the shopā€™s classic 1950s neon sign this week (and down the sidewalk) for one last hurrah. But despite the recent surge of customers, business at Twin Donuts never recovered after the pandemic (and gentrification), according to the owners. Why are we emo after reading Boston.com readersā€™ final messages for the diner ā€¦

THINGS TO DO

Weekend plans

šŸ“š Add to your TBR list. If you loved Scholastic book fairs as a kid, youā€™re gonna love Bow Marketā€™s Book Fair on March 22. Expect everything from cookbook swaps, to author signings, to literary drag trivia.

šŸ‘Ÿ Give your kicks a glow up. A pair of white shoes hates to see this custom sneaker workshop coming on March 22. You bring the kicks, they bring the art supplies, and you're off!

šŸ§˜ Trade boozy brunch for NO-mosas. Dray Drinks is hosting a beginner yoga class at its shop March 22 to relax your body and mind. Make sure to stick around for complimentary No-Mosas!

šŸ” Celebrate your bracket with a burger. Friendly reminder that even if your bracket breaks, if youā€™re one of the first 100 guests through the door at Scores from March 21-23, you still get a free smashburger

šŸ”„ See local comics before they get hot. Winter Hill Brewing is showcasing some of Bostonā€™s best up-and-coming comedians on March 22. Consider this your chance to see them before theyā€™re traded to NYC or L.A.!

šŸ¶ Celebrate National Puppy Day. Weā€™re not entirely sure who came up with this ā€œholiday,ā€ but if it means getting to hang with a bunch of puppies at Park-9 Dog Barā€™s puppy socialization meet up on March 23, weā€™re there.

šŸ§¶ Get your craft juices flowing. Boston Public Marketā€™s free FiberFest is going down March 23, where youā€™ll find everything from yarn painting, to free needle felting, to indigo-dyeing workshops.

šŸ’ƒ Scream sing with other Swifties. Itā€™s been two years since The Eras Tour kicked off, which means we have to run the concert back with this epic Swiftie Sunday dance party on March 23.

ONE LAST THING

Belichickā€™s #StillGotIt

Image: Brynn Anderson/AP

Well, we officially know waaay more about Bill Belichickā€™s dating life than weā€™d prefer.

ICYMI: The 72-year-old former Patriots head coach is dating 24-year-old pageant queen Jordon Hudson (yes, 24). The couple went IG official last year, posting several happy pics together since (lest we forget this wild Halloween coupleā€™s costume.)

And this past weekend, they added another chapter to their IG lore, when Hudson shared a scroll of images of Belichick lifting her up airplane-style with just his hands and feet at the beach. One of the hashtags read ā€œ#StillGotIt.ā€ And while it did make us throw up in our mouths a little, sheā€™s technically not wrong

But perhaps the best part of the post? The comments, which ranged from proud to concerned for his health. One wrote: ā€œDude probably just gave himself a slipped disc or sciatica for like 6 weeks.ā€

ā€” Written by Emily Schario and Gia Orsino

šŸ˜¤ Thanks for reading! Listen, say what you want about their ~50-year age gap (we do), but Belichick seems happy (and heā€™s clearly not skipping leg day).

šŸ’œ Special shoutout to today's sponsor, Toast, for supporting local journalism and helping bring fresh New England flavors straight to your table.

šŸ’šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø The results are in: In a landslide, 90% of readers said that if Bostonā€™s mayoral election were held today, theyā€™d cast their vote for Mayor Michelle Wu. One Wu supporter (and ā€œParks and Recā€ fan) said, ā€œThis is as obvious a choice as deciding between Leslie Knope & Bobby Newport.ā€
