B-SIDE HOTLINE

We fixed your first-date plans

He’s a 10 … but doesn’t know where you take you on a first date. Sounds like he doesn’t read B-Side (so, really, he’s a 4).

With fielding season in full swing, we pinged our experts, our team, and our wonderfully picky readers to collect unique first-date ideas that aren’t just grabbing drinks.

YOUR PICKS

🌳 The great outdoors, a.k.a. Jamaica Pond and the Esplanade. One reader put it simply: “Trees, flowers, people.” What more could you want?! There’s a reason why a walk in the park can be … a walk in the park. “It's a low-stakes activity,” one B-Sider said. “If it goes well, there are plenty of spots for coffee, ice cream, or a drink close by.” We’re team J.P. Licks if you’re walking the pond, or Night Shift’s pop-up for a post-Esplanade stroll.

OUR PICKS

🔬 Museum of Science, West End. Emily’s husband planned their first date here back in 2015, and, well … she married him. In all seriousness, the MOS’ special sauce is in its built-in ice breakers: The musical stairs are prime giggle territory; the challenges in the Hall of Human Life welcome friendly competition; the Theater of Electricity keeps you close in the dark. The MOS invites your inner-child you come out to play — a great vibe check opportunity, if you ask us.

🛍️ Bow Market, Somerville. An ideal first date spot offers room to linger … or leave early. Bow Market has both. The small biz window shopping is ripe with conversation starters (this itinerary is a great start), Pop’s Pinball Parlor offers a hands-on activity, and if all goes well, the James Beard-nominated Rebel Rebel wine bar is there for a glass (or two). If it clicks, you’ll lose track of time. If it doesn’t … the Green Line is close.

EXPERT PICKS

This month’s expert is Meredith Goldstein, the Globe’s Love Letters columnist, who knows a thing or two about what makes sparks fly.

📚 Map Room Lounge, Boston Public Library Central Branch. Listen, sometimes people just wanna do drinks. So I always tell people, “You can get a classy cocktail at a bar at the BPL!” So many people don’t know there’s a bar inside, but it’s true. Try a Dorian Gray (there’s some tea in there) or the "Anna Karenina” inspired drink with bitters. Then you can wander the stacks — for free.

🍻 Delux Cafe, South End. Just get there early; they don’t take reservations. It’s a neighborhood restaurant where you can comment on kitschy wall decor and Christmas lights, avoid sports (no big TVs), and enjoy the benefits of flattering (a.k.a. dim) lighting. Bonus: It’s a great walking neighborhood to keep the party going if you’re vibing.

Be free to be spontaneous

🌲☀️ New Hampshire is for the people whose ideal itinerary is “we’ll figure it out when we get there.” Maybe you hike a mountain. Maybe you float in a lake for four hours. Maybe you eat fried seafood by the water and call that enough activity for the day. All valid. Between scenic drives, small-town wandering, lake days, and fresh air that feels weirdly therapeutic, there’s no wrong way to do summer here. Start planning your New Hampshire escape now.

CITY

Quick & dirty headlines

Image: David L. Ryan/The Boston Globe

🥵 This week’s scorcher is def living up to the hype. Boston cracked 96 (!) degrees on Tuesday, shattering the previous May 19 record of 90 and tying for the second-hottest spring day in the metro area. And it’s looking like we could break another record today. With the state’s first heat advisory of the year in full swing, you already know the drill: Limit time in the sun, find the shade, remember that adults can also enjoy splash pads, and HYDRATE. Also, pack an umbrella. There’s a chance of t-storms during your evening commute.

✈️ You can clear TSA in … Framingham? Yup! Starting June 1, passengers flying on Delta or JetBlue who take the Framingham Logan Express can go through TSA security and check their bags at a remote terminal before boarding a bus to the airport. And it’s a pretty good deal: The service + airport transport = $9 each way (parking is also just $7/day). This first-of-its-kind program in the country is all about reducing airport congestion. And assuming it goes well, it could be expanded to other Logan Express sites and airlines.

⛴️ Now arriving: A new MBTA ferry route. The MBTA is launching a new F10 “Harbor Loop” ferry route on June 29, providing year-round, weekday service connecting Lovejoy Wharf, Central Wharf, Seaport, and Logan. You can catch a ride every 30 minutes during peak travel periods (here are the schedule deets). To be clear: This new route is meant to supplement — not replace — the existing Seaport Ferry route. Even better: One-way fares will cost the same as a normal T ride ($2.40). Toot! Toot!

🚃 Ain’t no rest for the wicked Green Liners. Let’s just say, making the Green Line better is an *ongoing journey* as the C branch will be bypassing a handful of stops over the next few weeks to improve accessibility. Outbound Green Line trains will skip Englewood Avenue and Tappan Street between May 18 and July 10 (just use the stops before or after). Inbound Green Line trains will also skip Tappan Street now through June 12 (again, stick to the stops before and after). Godspeed!

ONE LAST THING

Don’t mess with the nest

Image: Jessica Rinaldi/The Boston Globe. Illustration: Emily Schario.

Porter Square turkeys have some competition. Meet Boston geese.

This TikTok of a goose attacking an adorable dog on a walk in Boston went MEGA viral last week — the dog basically gets helicoptered by the neck to avoid the goose’s wrath.

Some viewers said the dog appeared to be “minding its business” before the goose charged. But a recent Boston University grad who studied geese/human interactions in urban environments (sidebar: absolutely reading their thesis) said the goose’s behavior wasn’t unprovoked. It was defensive.

Spring = geese nesting and mating season, which means heightened security around their goslings and lower tolerance for perceived threats. Pro-tip: Geese usually give warning signs like curving their necks into an “S” shape, bobbing their heads, hissing, or flapping their wings to appear larger, before they snap.

So long story short: Don’t mess with the nest.

💜 Special shoutout to today's sponsor, Visit NH, for supporting local journalism and making “just a weekend trip” into something that could last forever.

👀 The results are in: When it comes to dead horses, 40% of B-Siders love beating up on politicians they hate. But one reader who loves talking smack about an ex brought up a good point: “I'm in a band. It literally fuels us.” Call us when the album drops!
