The Boston uniform 2.0

If you’ve left your house after 8 p.m., you’ve definitely seen “the Boston uniform.” Picture:  A black top, blue jeans, and a pair of white sneakers that every 20-something woman in this town seemingly owns.

The look has recently gotten some buzz … with more people trying to move away from it. So, we asked local fashion experts how they would elevate the iconic(?) fit:

👔 Add a layer. 26-year-old Nicole Saliba coined the term “serve-a-phobic” to describe Boston’s fashion scene. She says it doesn’t = unfashionable, but rather, “feeling like you can’t dress outside of the norm,” without getting some looks. One way she’d shake things up (that won’t land you in Boston fashion jail): Pop a corset over your top. It’s an easy way to accentuate your waist while adding a pop of color or structure.

👠 Swap the black for red. The one thing Best of Boston personal stylist Gilda Miranda hears from almost every local client? “I'm not looking to stand out.” Out of the hundreds of clients she’s worked with she’s “maybe had one or two people that want prints and exciting accessories.” But she thinks your 20s are the perfect time to experiment, so she suggests a pop of red. Whether it’s a boot, purse, or lip, it adds a bit of *spice* without going overboard.

👖 Ditch the jeans for a vintage skirt. A lot of customers at Raspberry Beret are trying to beat the Boston uniform allegations, general manager O Barton said. Their winning strategy? Start small by “swapping out one piece” for a standout vintage element. They’d recommend “trading out the jean for a really gorgeous, well-fitting maxi skirt.” A 90s-style printed skirt (like this one) adds more interest without much effort — you can even keep the black bodysuit!

👛 Grab a funky accessory. For all the hate it gets, “in some ways [the Boston uniform] is really classic,” said MassArt fashion professor Kenlyn Jones. “They’re pieces that you can wear anytime or keep in your closet and they'll come back around.” All you need is a little bit of styling to level it up. Pick an accessory you love, whether it’s a bold lip, a vintage oversized blazer, a belt, or a silk scarf. And remember: “Confidence is the best accessory.”

QUICK QUESTION!

👖 Let’s hear it: Is the Boston uniform cute?

CITY

Quick & dirty headlines

❄️ Grab your shovels, Boston. The Blizzard of ‘26 is over, and all that’s left to do is (literally) dig ourselves out of this mess. In an effort to avoid a repeat of last month, Boston is tweaking its snow removal tactics, from increasing the number of snow farms to having more removal equipment on the roads. The city is also prioritizing clearing crosswalks, bike lanes, and curbs, and avoiding storing snow at intersections (bless). Thankfully, after today’s wintry mix, the sun and (relatively) warm temps this week should help us out.

🤖 Meet Gov. Maura Healey’s new assistant: ChatGPT. No joke: Mass. is officially the first state in the country to give state workers an AI assistant in ChatGPT. But not everyone is on board. Healey said the tool will make the government “faster, more efficient, and more effective” by helping employees cut down on repetitive tasks and focus on higher-value work (think: drafting, outlining, summarizing). But groups like the National Association of Government Employees, union officials, and even residents were quick to share their doubts.

🐼 This Asian food fest is coming back to town. We’re talking about Panda Fest, the panda-themed food and culture festival that debuted last year, bringing tons of viral Asian bites to Boston. They’re running it back this May at Lower Allston’s Ohiri Field from May 15-17, with over 80 food vendors, 20 merch booths, cultural performances, and of course, pandas on literally everything. Early bird tickets will drop here on Feb. 26!

🤤 Here’s a restaurant guide that won’t break the bank: Boston.com’s affordable eats series has landed in Quincy with a roundup of the neighborhood’s best eats under $20. On the menu: A sweet, smoky pork bahn mi from Bánh Mì Ba Lẹ for just $8.50; Greater Boston’s best chicken sandwich (apparently) for $16 at Rubato; grilled pork over succulent rice noodles for $18 from Lê Madeline; and literally the entire brunch menu at Craig’s Cafe. Hungry for more? Here’s the whole guide

ONE LAST THING

An adult snow day

It’s easy to be grumpy about a winter storm. After all, most of us spent the day working from home, shoveling snow, and grumbling about the cold. But consider this your reminder that it’s possible to actually enjoy a snow day.

On Monday, a few brave souls ventured outside to seize the day. Some folks took the rare opportunity to walk down the street without cars, or admire how the city looks covered in snow.

Others chose chaos, heading out to cross-country ski on sidewalks, hit some gnarly jumps on the Common, snowboard down Beacon Hill, or, in one dude’s case, hold onto the back of a sports car and hit the road water ski-style — though we wouldn’t recommend trying that one at home.
