The B’s are back in biz

The C’s brought us a banner, the Sox were .500, and the Pats are likely cooking up a flopBut what about the Bruins?

Well, their regular season kicks off tonight against the Florida Panthers (and as of Monday evening, the game was on despite Hurricane Milton, but keep your eyes peeled).

Here’s what to know:

🏒 The B’s ended last season with a thud. After an expectation-defying regular season, the Bruins found themselves knocked out of the playoffs by the Panthers in a heartbreaking Game 6 loss. Despite having some star players and one of the best defenses in the NHL, it was the second straight year Florida ended the B’s playoff run (and the Panthers then went on to win the Stanley Cup).

This offseason’s tea was PIPING hot. Long story short: Historically, one of the B’s keys to success was their best-in-the-NHL goalie duo, Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark. But after trading Ullmark and putting all their eggs in the Swayman basket, the team almost fumbled their new leading man (and likely their chances at Cup contention) when contract negotiations stalled. But on Sunday, the Bruins finally locked Swayman down, inking a huge $66 million, eight-year contract.

👋 We’ll be seeing some new faces on the ice. The team also made a couple of money moves in the offseason to fill key holes and beef up their roster. Among the most notable newbies? Defenseman Nikita Zadorov and center Elias Lindholm. They seem to be gelling with the team so far, but Boston will need more than just those two if they want to support other franchise players like Charlie McAvoy and David Pastrnak when the puck officially drops.

🏆 So … are we going to win or what!? TL;DR, don’t bet on a Stanley Cup. But it’s not unthinkable. According to the pros, it’s looking like the B’s are solid playoff contenders, but not likely to win it all. Depending on how well Swayman takes on his new role — and how well the newbies are able to aid and elevate the team’s other franchise talent — those predictions could swing either way.

💯 But win, lose, or draw, this season is a big deal. That’s because 2024 is the Bruins’ Centennial. They’re the first U.S. NHL team to reach the milestone, and they’ve been going all out all year to celebrate. But the crown jewel of the festivities is the Centennial game, which will be played on Dec. 1, the 100th anniversary of their first-ever game in 1924. You can grab tickets here.

Quick & dirty headlines

🕊️ Boston marked one year since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. From campus protests to increased antisemitism, the year has had huge impacts around the world, including on many Bostonians. On Sunday, thousands of Pro-Palestinian demonstrators from Boston Coalition for Palestine marched around Boston, including on Storrow Drive, stopping traffic for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, some Jewish groups held local memorial gatherings, support groups, and panels to commemorate the day.

🚌 Some MBTA routes are getting a glow up. For once, we have some big service updates that (thankfully) have nothing to do with the T. First, weekday service on the Lynn Ferry has been extended through Nov. 29 due to high demand, though weekend service will be coming to a close on Oct. 13. Plus, phase one of the agency’s bus network redesign plan is launching Dec. 15, which = some adjusted routes and increased service on the 86, 104, 109, and 110, and combining routes on the 116 and 117. Check out the deets here.

👗 Boomerangs is finally on its way back. The Central Square location of the beloved thrift store, which closed in June, is really living up to its name after news broke that More Than Words, a local nonprofit bookstore, plans to take over and reopen it. While books are the main game at More Than Words, the shop has dabbled in online and in-store consignment sales with some success. The current plan is to reopen the storefront by Dec. 1 at the latest. In the meantime, you can drop off donations at the bookstore’s South End and Waltham locations.

🎤 The Daddy Gang got political this weekend. If you thought “brat summer” was as online as this presidential election could get, think again. ICYMI: VP Kamala Harris broke the internet on Sunday after appearing on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, hosted by BU alum Alex Cooper. The most-listened-to podcast for women covers everything from mental health to outrageous sexcapades, but Harris used the time to talk about abortion and other women-related issues. This is just the start of Harris’ media blitz, with more interviews slated for The View and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week.

ONE LAST THING

Dunkin’ tasting menu

Illustration: Gia Orsino

There are a lot of things that Dunkin’ stans want. Off the top of our head: The Dunkaccino, iced apple cider, French crullers at every location, and more Coolatta flavors. But we’re not here to tell you about any of that.

Instead we’re here to tell you about something literally no one asked for: A 12-course Dunkin’ tasting menu at the Amex Gold Cafe. Yes, for real.

The menu is extremely fancy, and includes Dunkin’-inspired bites and sips like poutine style hash browns, horchata cold brew, chocolate dipped bacon, a banana chocolate chip petit four, and an ice cream donut. Just look at it.

The kicker? Not only does it cost between $75 and $100 depending on your AmEx Gold status (so, $100), but it’s only popping up in L.A. and New York City. Now that’s betrayal.

🍩 Thanks for reading! All of that said … if Dunkin’ wants to send us out to try it … we wouldn’t say no. In the name of journalism!

💜 Special shoutout to today’s sponsor, the Massachusetts State Treasury, for supporting local journalism and helping residents reclaim what’s rightfully theirs.

📝 Correction: Yesterday’s newsletter incorrectly stated that the Savannah Bananas lottery was for free tickets. The lotto is actually for the opportunity to purchase tickets. Our B!

🤑 The results are in: 30% of polled readers say that tech is the best thing to buy on Prime Day. But the true message from B-Siders was … to buy nothing. Every single write in (yes, seriously) was some version of this message: “Nothing! I like my planet and workers' rights more than saving a few bucks.” Go off!
